MacDonald Gill Endurance postcard. Endurance was built as an Arctic tourist vessel but purchased by Ernest Shackleton to use in Antarctica. In 1915 the ship was beset in the ice, crushed and sank in the Weddell Sea. MacDonald Gill James Caird postcard. Sir Ernest Shackleton's Endurance was crushed in the ice of the Weddell Sea and sank in 1915. James Caird, a lifeboat, was transformed into a sailing vessel in which Shackleton and five companions sailed the 800 miles from Elephant Island to South Georgia.
