Activities: | One of seven New Zealand Crown Research Institutes (CRIs) formed in 1992, NIWA provides a scientific basis for the sustainable management and development of New Zealand's atmospheric, marine and freshwater systems and associated resources. Spread throughout New Zealand, NIWA has its corporate headquarters in Auckland with the main Antarctic research based at the Christchurch campus, and the library based at the Wellington campus. NIWA scientists have worked for many years on Antarctic atmospheric processes and aquatic ecosystems. A NIWA research vessel, RV Tangaroa, also supplies logistical support for scientific studies and hydrographic surveys in the Southern Ocean. NIWA staff participate widely in international initiatives, representing New Zealand in such fora as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). |
