Charitable organization concerned with the protection and conservation of the historical heritage of human endeavour in Antarctica. NZAHT conducts an annual programme of conservation of the historic huts, sites and associated artefacts in the Ross Dependency, maintaining an inventory database of over 8,000 historic artefacts. Government unit responsible for administering matters of international policy relating to Antarctica. In 1992, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade took over responsibility for Antarctic affairs from the disbanded Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR). Seeks to maintain a New Zealand presence in the Ross Dependency; to support and participate in the Antarctic Treaty System; to protect the Antarctic environment and oversee the implementation of the Antarctic (Environmental Protection) Act; and to influence developments in an area which due to its proximity is of national importance to New Zealand.

Carries out earth science research primarily in the Ross Sea Region, with a focus on climate history from sediment and ice cores. Has particular expertise in scientific geological drilling. Coordinated Cape Roberts Project and is now involved in ANDRILL (multi-national geological drilling projects).

Supersedes New Zealand Antarctic Programme and Ross Dependency Research Committee. Responsible for the planning, coordination and management of logistical support for New Zealand's Antarctic activities, including operating the all-year Antarctic station Scott Base (77.51'S; 166.45'E). Provides policy advice to Government, contributes to public awareness of Antarctica, and provides a repository for Antarctic information. The principal New Zealand Antarctic Agency.

Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) is a government department which:
- provides a secure environment for buying, selling and subdividing property,
- administers the Crown's interests in land through:
- provides a nationally consistent valuation system for rating purposes
- assists Government and its agencies to address Treaty of Waitangi issues through the provision of excellent information on land history and status
- ensures that New Zealand has high quality databases for its survey, mapping, hydrographic and property activities.

One of seven New Zealand Crown Research Institutes (CRIs) formed in 1992, NIWA provides a scientific basis for the sustainable management and development of New Zealand's atmospheric, marine and freshwater systems and associated resources.

Spread throughout New Zealand, NIWA has its corporate headquarters in Auckland with the main Antarctic research based at the Christchurch campus, and the library based at the Wellington campus. NIWA scientists have worked for many years on Antarctic atmospheric processes and aquatic ecosystems. A NIWA research vessel, RV Tangaroa, also supplies logistical support for scientific studies and hydrographic surveys in the Southern Ocean.

NIWA staff participate widely in international initiatives, representing New Zealand in such fora as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

From 1 July 1996, NZAI will incorporate the activities of the New Zealand Antarctic Programme and the Ross Dependency Research Committee, both of the latter being disestablished at that date.

Originally formed to encourage the New Zealand Government to initiate a national Antarctic programme and to establish a permanent base. These goals were achieved in 1957/58. Now acts as a forum bringing together all those interested in Antarctica and fostering public knowledge of the continent. In addition to the National Office and Polar Information Centre in Christchurch, there are four branches in New Zealand, based in Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago, and an Overseas branch to administer the overseas membership.

Promotes study of the birds of New Zealand, the New Zealand sub-Antarctic Islands and the Ross Dependency.

Seeks to preserve and protect the indigenous flora and fauna and natural features of New Zealand, including the New Zealand sub-Antarctic Islands and Ross Dependency, for their intrinsic worth and for the benefit of all people.
