Ishavsmuseet displays a hundred-year history of sealing, over-wintering hunting expeditions in northeast Greenland, and mining operations in Ny-Ålesund, Spitsbergen, or Brandal City, as the place was first named. In addition to the exhibits is the Arctic vessel, M/S Aarvak, constructed in 1912, brought to land in dry-dock and built in to the side of the museum. The museum also has a section dedicated to the explorer Ragnar Thorseth who was the first Norwegian to the North Pole, and also sailed around the world in the Viking ship "Saga Siglar". |
