Collections: Arctic museum modelled after the 100-year old peat house at Etah where Peary stayed. Founder and Curator is Pentti Kronqvist. Collections include materials from Saami and Inuit, literature about Arctic, ca.100 films, relics from Arctic expeditions of Phipps and Nordenskjold (Vega).

Year of foundation: 1884
Collections: Extensive collections from Lapland, northern Russia, Siberia and Alaska, also collections from Greenland and Northern Canada. The Alaskan artefacts were primarily collected by Arvid Etholén between 1821 and 1845. The National Museum hosts a permanent exhibition of Sámi culture, and a new permanent exhibition of the Museum of Cultures is in preparation with the title TERRA POLARIS – Land of the North Star.
Publications: Alaska - Russian America (Varjola, 1988); The Etholen Collection: the ethnographic collection of Adolf Etholen and his contemporaries in the National Museum of Finland (Varjola, 1991); Finno-Ugric collections at the National Museum of Finland (Lehtinen, 1990); exhibition catalogues. The library includes ethnographic manuscripts of Sirelius (western Siberia), and Itkonen and Paulaharju (Lapland).
