Notes: | The Research Archives unit falls directly under the library committee within the organizational framework of the university library and has the following functions: Management: this function involves the responsibility for acquiring and developing archival material and for promoting contacts between researchers and disseminating research information. This includes, for example, following developments in the archival field and the same time taking into consideration the requirements of research and education for archival information. Loans: The university's borrowing and lending out of material from different archives is handled by the Research Archives. The acquisition of record catalogues from the Swedish National Archives, the Regional Archives in Härnösand and Östersund, and from a number of other sources, greatly facilitates loan possibilities for researchers and students at the university. Microfiche: There is a great demand for microfilmed material from regional as well as national archives in order to provide information for cultural, social and medical history research and teaching at the university. The Research Archives can produce and acquire material of this nature in collaboration with the National Archives' new unit SVAR (Swedish Archives Information) in Ramsele. In co-operation with SVAR, the Research Archives can also assist with the new microfilming of source materials and in the production of archival information in microfiche format. Equipment: a 16 mm microfilm camera, a photocopier (from microfiche to paper), a number of microfiche readers and computers for local register and on-line searchers in SVARS's data base. Automatic data processing: In addition, the Research Archives can assist in arranging for computerized data from research projects and data bases in Sweden and abroad to be accessible at the university. This function is being developed in close collaboration with the Demographic Data Base in UmeÃ¥. Resources permitting, the research Archives can even offer individual researchers and students certain facilities for developing and using their own data files; above all, on the condition that the Research Archives may document and preserve such data files for future research and the advancement of knowledge. Equipment: personal computers and an optical scanner for importing printed or type-written text and images. Manuscript collections and library work: The Research Archives' personnel also register and catalogue the university's manuscript collections and deal with the new acquisition and surveillance of archives, especially of persons with Norrlandic origins. This work includes, for example, the building up of collection of reference books and handbooks related in particular to regional and local history. |
