COLLECTIONS: Amalgamated in 1994 with the Library of the University of Iceland. Compiles the national bibliography of Iceland.

ON-LINE CATALOGUES: Gegnir is a library system that hosts a union catalogue of about 120 Icelandic libraries on the Internet. It gives information about books, serials, Icelandic journal articles and other holdings of these libraries. is a digital library where the material comprises the printed heritage that is preserved in the newspapers and periodicals of the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Iceland. The Icelandic part covers newspapers and periodicals printed mostly before 1920. Antique maps of Iceland (older than 1900) are a special collection of the National and University Library of Iceland. The maps have been converted to a digital format and are accessible here. A short historical description in Icelandic and English is available for every map. Sagnanet, the Icelandic medieval literature, consists of the entire range of Icelandic family sagas. It will also include a very large portion of Germanic/Nordic mythology (the Eddas), the history of Norwegian kings, contemporary sagas and tales from the European age of chivalry. A great number of manuscripts contain Icelandic ballads, poetry or epigrams.
