On the return voyage to New Zealand the endeavour was made to carry half-a-dozen unfortunate adelie penguins to New Zealand. In default of fresh fish we were compelled to fee them on sardines and white bait (tinned). This diet was too much for them and the last one died in New Zealand. He is here shown after taking his bath in one of the canvas baths we ourselves had used.
