G. Rooney was born in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1883. He joined the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09 (Nimrod) at the age of 25 as an able-bodied seaman, signing on in Lyttelton on 1 December 1908, the day Nimrod headed south for the second time. He signed off in Sydney, Australia, on 1 May 1909, suggesting he was going straight on to another commission as a sailor.
