William C. Roberts was born in London in 1872. He served as a cook in the Royal Navy, and was a pastry chef at the Naval and Military Club. He joined the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09 (Nimrod) at the age of 35 as expedition cook and assistant zoologist. He was vital to the success of the expedition and its sledging journeys, warding off scurvy with a diet rich in fresh meat. Nothing is known about his life after his return from the Antarctic.

Roberts was commemorated by the South Magnetic Pole Party who named Cape Roberts at 77°2' S 163°12' E after him.
