Sidney B. Riches was born in 1880 in London. He has extensive experience as a sailor, and joined the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09 (Nimrod) at the age of 27 as able-bodied seaman. He signed on in Polar on 26 June 1907 and signed off after the first voyage to the Antarctic on 21 March 1908. He signed on again at the end of August 1908, and signed off in August 1909 having participated in the surveying of the islands in the Sub-Antarctic waters on Nimrod's voyage back to London under the captaincy of John King Davis.

Riches was awarded a bronze Polar Medal for his role in the expedition. The Institute holds a copy of Riches' journal of the expedition, which covers the periods 1 January to 8 March 1908 and 1 December 1908 to 30 August 1909.
