John Partridge was born in Lyttelton, New Zealand, in 1885. His first experience of the Antarctic was as a sailor on board the Morning, the relief ship sent to McMurdo Sound in 1902-1903 and 1903-1904 to assist the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-04 (Discovery) led by Robert Falcon Scott. He joined the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09 (Nimrod) as fireman on 28 December 1907, just four days before the first Antarctic voyage, and signed off on 21 March 1908. Partridge was brother-in-law of the expedition’s leading seaman, James Paton.

After returning from the Antarctic, Partridge joined the Lyttelton Harbour Board as a fireman on the dredge, Whaka. He stayed in this post until he retired.
