John Montague was born in London in 1869. He joined the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09 (Nimrod) at the age of 38 as ship’s cook, signing on on 26 July 1907 and signing off at the end of August 1909. He seems to have been a relatively well-liked member of the crew and his food was regularly complimented.
