Douglas George Jeffrey was born in 1885. He was serving as a lieutenant-commander with the Royal Naval Reserve when he was appointed navigating officer on the Shackleton-Rowett Expedition 1921-22 (Quest), led by Ernest Henry Shackleton. Setting out from London on 17 September 1921, the expedition reached South Georgia, where Shackleton suffered a heart attack and died on 5 January 1922. Frank Wild took command and the expedition continued, briefly exploring the South Sandwich Islands and the Weddell Sea before returning to Britain. Jeffrey died in 1972
