Hancock was born in 1878 in Lancashire. His first experience of the Antarctic was serving on the Morning, the relief ship sent to McMurdo Sound in 1902-03 and 1903-04 to assist the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-04 (Discovery) led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott. He joined the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09 (Nimrod), led by Ernest Henry Shackleton, at the age of 29. Hancock signed on as first steward in Lyttelton, New Zealand, on 28 December 1907 and signed off in September 1908. Very little is known about Hancock's life after the expedition.
