Irvine Oswald Gaze was born ca. 1890 in Australia. He joined the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914-17 (Aurora) to meet the party crossing with Ernest Henry Shackleton from the Weddell Sea. Gaze was general assistant and participated in early depot-laying operations.

After the expedition, Gaze served as a pilot with the Royal Flying Corps during the Fisrt World War. After the war, he returned to Australia where he was an executive with a boot and shoe firm. Later, he farmed in the western region of Victoria and finally retired to live near Melbourne, where he died on 22nd April 1978.
