James Duncan was born in Perthshire in 1870. He was working as a shipwright on the expedition ship Discovery in Dundee when he was selected for the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-04 (Discovery), led by Robert Falcon Scott, as able seaman. Duncan was a member of the shore party and took part in the sledging programme, returning in the relief ship Morning after one year in the Antarctic. He was awarded the Polar Medal for his part in the expedition.
