Craft was born in 1871 in Hull. At the age of 36, Craft joined Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09 (Nimrod) as Second Engineer. He signed on in Poplar on 26 July 1907 and sailed with Nimrod to Lyttelton on the first Antarctic voyage. He signed off in Lyttelton on 21 March 1908, when McGowan was promoted to Second Engineer.
