David Silver Allan was born in Montrose, Scotland in 1870. He was serving with the Royal Navy in HMS Majestic when he joined the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-04 (Discovery), led by Robert Falcon Scott, as petty officer. He participated in several sledging journeys, including the sledge support party on the second South-Western journey in 1903. On his return to the United Kingdom, he was promoted chief petty officer. During the First World War, he served with the Royal Navy and from October 1917 to March 1918 was attached to the Royal Air Force.
