A carved mahogany contribution box for the South Polar Times, from the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-04 (Discovery).
Physical description:
A mahogany box with a sloping lid and a hinged door (two metal hinges) on the front. There is a slot in the lid, and a keyhole in the door. The door is carved with a rising sun and 'SOUTH POLAR // * // TIMES // DISCOVERY // 1902', while the sides and lid are decorated with additional panels nailed in place. The front, sides and lid are varnished, but not the back. There is a luggage label stuck to the back, and four screw-holes in the back for mounting the box to a wall.
