Bring polar education to life by borrowing a handling collection.
Handling collections are free to borrow for one working week (Monday-Friday).
You will need to collect the handling collection/s within office hours, 9am-5pm on the Monday and return them to us by 5pm on the Friday.
You will be able to park temporarily in the staff car park. Directions on how to get to the Polar Museum at the Scott Polar Research Institute are available.
Arctic Storybag: Based on the true story of a group of stranded beluga whales, Steve Schuch's book, A Symphony of Whales, is the inspiration for this pack. The bag includes: the book, a card game based on Arctic animals, a model beluga whale, a teacher pack full of cross curricular activity ideas, a newspaper article about the actual event, maps and some Russian language tips! This pack is aimed at Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2. This pack is in an A3 zipped wallet.
Primary Literacy Pack: Are you in need of some inspiration for your literacy lessons? This bag contains a class set of polar word cards, laminated copies of some of our historic photos and a teacher pack bursting with ideas, additional information and copies of archive documents that can be used in the classroom. This pack is based around Captain Scott's Terra Nova expedition and is suitable for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children. Additional classroom resources include films, teacher packs and images. This pack is in an A3 zipped wallet.
We have temprarily withdrawn our clothing collections from loan as, due to the nature of their contents, we are unable to sanitise them effectively between uses.
Modern Polar Clothing: A bright orange kit bag containing all the insulating layers of clothing needed to keep warm in a polar region. The children in your class can get kitted up in thermal clothing, boots, balaclava, gloves, mittens and goggles. The kit includes a teacher pack full of activity ideas and information. Old Polar Clothing: Get kitted up in replica clothing based on the Scott and Shackleton expeditions. The box contains clothing, mittens, gloves, socks, balaclava, underwear, outer clothing (no shoes or goggles are included in this pack).
