The New Geyser

Record: Y: 54/35/2

by Dayes, E.

This and other very similar representations held by SPRI of these geysers relate to a journey in Iceland made in 1789 by John Thomas Stanley. He produced a sketch which is the basis for these watercolours and print. For his account of the journey see: Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh Vol3, Part 2, 1794 p. 127-53. Note, on front: 'The water is thrown up to the height of 130 feet, and the column is six feet and a half where it comes out of the pipe' [1790]
