Full description:

A pair of reversible red-brown leather mittens, with a thumb on either side. They are identical to N: 786 (also used on the British Graham Land Expedition) and have probably been treated with whale oil to prevent the leather freezing. The main body is made of a single piece of leather with a separate piece inserted on either side for the thumbs; it has piped seams. A textile edging has been stitched around the opening of the mittens to create a cuff, and has been coated with red paint.
