medal: A circular silver medal with an oxidised finish, 63mm in diameter. The obverse bears the head and shoulders of Sir Vivian Fuchs in bas relief, with the inscription 'VIVIAN ERNEST FUCHS' around the circumference. The name of the designer 'KOVACS' appears in very small letters on Fuchs' jacket. The reverse bears the words 'BRITISH ANTARCTIC SURVEY' around the circumference, and the middle space bears the name of the recipient and a short citation, in this case: 'SIR VIVIAN FUCHS // DIRECTOR // "... THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANY INTENTION OF TURNING BACK..." // 1973'. The edge is stamped with 'T&S' and several hallmarks. case: A square case with a dark blue leather covering and silver trim on the lid, and a metal clasp and hinge. The lid is lined with a cream satiny textile and the base with a cream velvety textile. |
