Description: A very tattered 6ft x 3ft Union Jack flag (a) in a green bag (b). The flag was flown at Shackleton station during the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1955-58, during the period 29 December 1956 to 29 May 1957.

Full description:

a: A rectangular Union Jack flag, the right half of which is missing. The Union Jack is made from strips of textile joined together with machine stitching. The top and bottom edges are hemmed. A strip of white textile is stitched to the left/pole edge to form a tube, which contains a rope which is stitched in position at the top, middle and bottom of the flag. There is a wooden toggle at the top, and a length protruding from the bottom with a loop at the end. The tube is printed with '6' x 3', '1955'.

A green textile bag, printed inside in black ink with 'HMR. 44 // [broad arrow] // 1953'.
