Full description: |
Stylish engraving of a woman with a fan, the imperious pose suggesting a play or story illustration. The dress has a bell shaped skirt with a small train, a tight waisted bodice with a peplum (a flounced extension over the skirt) and a fringed collar. The scrimshaw probably dates from around the mid 19th century but with no consistent fashion details it is difficult to date. The fringed collar is unusual. It may reflect a mid 19th century concept of the dress of an earlier period. |
