A romantic picture of a couple, probably American. It is difficult to date as the clothes have no particular fashionable features. The man's hat, with its broad brim and low crown, was the subject of jokes when it appeared in England during 1840s and the style remained uncommon until at least the 1870's as the tall (later top) hat was preferred. However, it was a popular style in America where the sensible decision was for less formality and more comfort. Although it is not outlined, it may have been illustrating a story and probably dates from the 1850s or 1860s. |
