This is what remains of the Nansen cooker used by Bowers, Cherry-Garrard and Wilson on the Winter Journey of 1911 to Cape Crozier during the British Antarctic Expedition 1910-13 (Terra Nova) - the rest of the cooker was blown away with tent at Cape Crozier. | ||||||||||

a: A large aluminium outer pot with lid. b: An aluminium outer cooker for melting snow. c: An aluminium inner cooker with lid. The cooker has two handles on the sides which fold over onto the lid to hold it in place, and the lid has a central handle. The lid is stamped '8'. d: A beige canvas 'cooker strap'. The canvas is folded in half and stitched so that it is double thickness. The cooker strap consists of a circular loop, with a cross strap which extends a short way beyond the loop on one side, and a long way beyond the loop on the other; the straps are stitched where they join. The short end of the cross strap has a metal eyelet; the long end of the cross strap is stitched to form a loop and has a string looped through and knotted back on itself. |
