Description: | A wooden ration box (1) containing empty metal tins representing the rations supplied to the South Georgia Survey 1955-56. The rations include Fry's 'Pronto' milk (2-4), 'Nespray' powdered milk (5), butter (6), salt (7), corned beef (8), St Ivel processed cheese (9), sausages (10), marmite (11), pea flour (12), dried onions (13), pemmican (14) and an unknown tin (15). The rations also included packaging for Kendall mint cake, chocolate, lemonade crystals and biscuits, but these have been disposed of. | ||||||||||

Y: 56/26/1: A rectangular plywood box with a hinged lid (two metal hinges along the short edge, reinforced with green textile). The edges and corners of the box are reinforced with strips of black-painted metal. There is a lampwick tie riveted to the front edge of the lid and to the front of the box for tying the lid closed. There are two wooden battens running cross-wise on the base, although one is now missing. The lid is stencilled in black with '1/29', and the long sides are stencilled 'S.G.S.' (South Georgia Survey) and '1/29'. There is a printed paper list of the contents of the box glued to the inside of the lid. Y: 56/26/2-4: Three empty rectangular metal tins with a brass-coloured coating. The lids are sealed with textile tape. There is yellow paper label printed with red text on the front of each tin reading: 'FRY'S // Pronto // SWEET MILK COCOA // MADE BY J. S. FRY & SONS LTD. // SOMERDALE, BRISTOL, ENGLAND'. There is a yellow paper label printed with black text on the back of each tin reading: 'DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING FRY'S PRONTO // For a Cup // Use three heaped teaspoonfuls of Pronto and add BOILING water, stirring briskly. Milk, or milk and water, may be used if preferred. // For Larger Quantities // Put the Pronto into a pan, three heaped teaspoonfuls for each cup. Add a little water and mix to a smooth paste. Gradually add the remainder to make a perfect mix. Stir while bringing to the BOIL. Milk, or milk and water, may be used if preferred.' Y: 56/26/5: An empty cylindrical metal tin with a lever lid. The ends of the tin are painted red-orange. There is a yellow paper label wrapped around the tin, printed with green and black text. The front of the label reads: 'NESPRAY // NESTLE'S // REGISTERED TRADE MARK // FULL CREAM // POWDERED MILK // A SPRAY DRIED MILK CONTAINING NOT LESS THAN 28% MILK FAT // NET WEIGHT 1 LB. (454 GRM.) // PREPARED IN THE NETHERLANDS'. The back of the label provides further information and directions for use in English and Dutch. Y: 56/26/6: An empty cylindrical metal tin with a no lid. The tin has a brass-coloured coating inside and out. The base of the tin is printed with: 'PURE BUTTER // 6 1/4 LBS. // [?] P.K.S. // [?]'. Y: 56/26/7: An empty cylindrical metal tin with a lever lid. The tin has a brass-coloured coating. There is a white paper label, printed with black text, on the side of the tin reading: 'ESTABLISHED 1845 // SALT // ANDREW LUSK // & CO. LTD.' Y: 56/26/8: An empty rectangular metal tin with slightly inward-sloping sides. The tin has a key stuck to the side but no lid. The tin has a brass-coloured coating. The base of the tin is embossed with 'W ANGLISS & CO // SYDNEY // AUSTRALIA // CORNED BEEF 12 OZ NET // INGREDIENTS BEEF // SALT SODIUM NITRATE'. Y: 56/26/9: An empty cylindrical metal tin with no base. The tin has a brass-coloured coating inside and out. There is a printed paper label on the side of the tin reading: 'St. IVEL // AWARDED 11 GOLD& SILVER MEDALS FOR EXCELLENCE OF QUALITY // PROCESSED CHEESE // CHEDDAR FLAVOUR // APLIN & BARRETT LIMITED. // WESTBURY, WILTS. // PRINTED IN ENGLAND'. Printed directly onto the tin below is '1 LB. // NETT'. Y: 56/26/10: An empty cylindrical metal tin with no base. The tin has a copper-coloured coating on the lid. There is a printed blue paper label wrapped around the tin. The front of the label reads: 'HARRIS // OXFORD // SAUSAGES // (SKINLESS) // INGREDIENTS. // BEEF, PORK, RUSK, VEAL, // SALT AND SPICES'. The back of the label reads: 'BACON CURERS TO H.M. There is a yellow paper label on the lid printed with red text, and a paper label on either side of the jar. Y: 56/26/12: An empty square metal tin with a round lever lid. The tin has a brass/copper-coloured coating. There is a white paper label, printed with black text, on the front of the tin reading: 'ESTABLISHED 1845 // ANDREW LUSK // & CO. LTD.' and overprinted with 'PEA FLOUR'. Y: 56/26/13: An empty square metal tin with a round lever lid. The tin has a brass/copper-coloured coating. There is a white paper label, printed with black text, on the front of the tin reading: 'ESTABLISHED 1845 // ANDREW LUSK // & CO. LTD.' and overprinted with 'DRIED // ONIONS'.
