Note: | Text, on reverse: 'Alert and Discovery entering the ice in the Waigatte on evening of 17th July ... Island of Disco on left ... we hauled through the ice (which was heavy berg) without diffiulty, a fair wind spring up which carried us past the Valorous which was under the land on left at anchor ... we did not notice her till well on the quarter ... we beat towards her but fog comming on, we bore away - that night we secured to an iceberg in calm and thick fog'.
