Full description: |
A 1:1 scale bronze statue of a husky dog standing with tail curled up and onto its back. The face points to its right, and the animal is depicted wearing a traditional lampwick pulling harness and leather collar whilst stood on rough terrain, cast as one piece. The whole is mounted on an un-dressed York stone plinth. A separate, rectangular, inscribed bronze plaque mounted on the plinth in front of the dog records in alphabetical order across two columns the names of Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey and British Antarctic Survey dog teams from 1945 to 1993, with a dedication from 2009 beneath and a further relief depiction of a similarly posed husky on the right. A rectangular black plaque with white border on the side of the plinth, level with the rear legs of the dog, records the details of its presentation to BAS in July 2009 and the subsequent move and loan to SPRI in 2015. A second smaller, rectangular black plaque with white border, level with the front paws of the cast husky, gives the names of the three original custodians of the statue who commissioned and raised the funds for the work, as well as two BAS dog archivists. |
