Title: Sextant
Description: A sextant (eight inch radius) with spare telescopes and lenses, in a wooden case, made by Heath & Co. Ltd. A plaque inside the box reads 'The Hezzanith Observatory Works, London, certificate of examination' and gives the date 'August 1914'. The sextant was used for navigation by Captain Frank Worsley on the James Caird during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914-16 (Endurance), and was rescued from the lifeboat by Huberht Hudson, the expedition's navigator.

Full description:

sextant: An 8-inch radius sextant, with (from left to right) three circular shade glasses, a rectangular horizon mirror, five square shade lenses, a rectangular index mirror, and two circular lenses. It has a wooden handle. The arc is marked in tens from 150 to 0, with a smaller central scale marked in twos from 10 to 0. Above the main scale is the sextant number, 'L777'. Attached to the index bar is a plaque with '"HEZZANITH" // ENDLESS TANGENT SCREW // AUTOMATIC CLAMP // PAT. No. 17840'.

case and spare telescopes and lenses: A wooden case with a hinged lid with a single hinge, a hook latch on either side of the box, and a lock on the front (the key is stored inside the case). On either side of the case is a metal handle. Inside the lid of the case is a paper 'Certificate of Examination' of the sextant, dated August 1914. The case contains eight assorted telescopes and parts of telescopes, a small screwdriver, and the key.
