Full description: |
A pair of painted metal goggles, made from a flat sheet of metal which tapers at the sides and has been gently bent vertically along the centre front of the goggles and more sharply bent at each side to fit round the face. The front is shaped to provide a gap for the nose. There are five narrow slits in the metal โ one at the end of each side piece and one in the top centre to take the three-way elasticated headband, and two along the sharp bend, the purpose of which is not clear. The headband is formed so that one strap passes over the head and another passes round the back of the head, and has one metal adjustor. There are two round holes in the goggles for eyes, over which are fixed round metal discs with cross-shaped eye slits โ each is fixed to the goggles with a single screw, enabling them to be pivoted out of the way. Attached to the inside of the goggles is a piece of piece of canvas-backed foam โ presumably both for comfort and to prevent the metal touching the face and causing frostbite.
