Used in kayak. Made from one main piece of dark brown dehaired seal skin seamed vertically down centre back. An additional triangular piece of same is sewn to centre back with sinew in running stitch. Rectangular strip of cream dehaired seal skin is sewn to upper edge to form a 30 mm wide band. Loop of same is attached to upper edge at centre front; two loops at centre back. Front is longer than back and forms a slight point at centre front. Skin is turned to the interior to form a casing around the bottom edge. Dehaired seal skin thong is threaded through casing emerging through hole at centre front. Ends of both thongs are threaded through centre of elliptical ivory button and through holes in figure-8 shaped ivory button. Each thong is then threaded through two circular ivory buttons and terminates in a tooth-shaped ivory button which is circumscribed with incised line. A narrow strip of cream dehaired seal skin is sewn around bottom edge above casing with two rows of sinew in running stitch. Decorated with 27 mm wide horizontal band overlaid 69 mm from upper edge and inserted vertically down centre back. Band consists of two parallel rows of cream dehaired seal skin enclosing three parallel wavy rows of same attached with beige thread. Holes in skin patched in two places on the interior with dark brown dehaired seal skin. Structural sewing and applique are by hand using sinew and thread.
