This type of harness was the first type devised by Scott, and was used on the first sledge journeys of the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901-04 (Discovery). The wide body belt was found to be a great improvement on the shoulder loop or rope waistband of earlier expeditions. |

Full description: |
A brown textile man-hauling harness. It consists of a textile chest/body band with a large metal D ring at either end, secured in place with a piece of leather. It has removable crossed tubular lampwick and leather shoulder straps. The backs of the straps have a metal clip, which clips to D rings attached to strips of leather on the back of the body band; the fronts of the straps have a leather strap with holes, which fasten into metal buckles attached to strips of leather on the front of the body band. A length of rope passes through the D rings and is spliced back on itself; the end is looped and spliced
