Description: |
A sealskin mitten (fur-side out) for the right hand, made by G.C.L. Bertram from the skin of a young hooded seal (crystophora cristata) during the British Graham Land Expedition 1934-37 (Penola). The mitten was found to be tough, warm and quick drying and considered the best type for general expedition work. |

Full description: |
A fur mitten (fur-side out) for the right hand, made from sealskin (hooded seal). It is made in five pieces: one for the back of the hand, one for the front, two for the thumb, and one for the cuff. There appears to be an additional layer on the thumb for reinforcement. The mitten is losing the hair on the palm side. There is a textile loop on the back of the hand near the thumb.
