Title: Medal
Description: A silver copy of the King Umberto Gold Medal awarded by the Royal Geographical Society of Italy to Edward Adrian Wilson, with a red case. The King Umberto Gold Medal was awarded by the Royal Geographical Society of Italy in honour of Captain R.F. Scott and presented by the Italian Ambassador to Lady Scott on 10 November 1913. Silver copies were presented to the wives/mothers of the rest of the Polar Party at the same time. This medal was presented to Mrs Wilson.

Full description:

medal: A circular silver medal, 55mm in diameter. The obverse shows a seated female figure in classical clothing with an olive branch in her right hand and another by her feet. In her left hand is a stick, and her left arm is resting on a globe, beneath which are the words 'ORBIS VIRTUTE DETECTUS'. On her head is a crown with a star above it. Beneath her are the words 'PIERONI LUCCA' (perhaps the name of the designer). Beneath that is a compass, on either side of which is a buttress with a lion’s head, a dolphin and another creature. Around the circumference are the words 'REALE SOCIETA GEOGRAFICA'. The reverse consists of two branches of foliage joined together at the bottom with a ribbon around the circumference of the medal, and a central inscription which reads: 'ALLA MEMORIA // DEL DOTTOR // E.A. WILSON // COMPAGNO // DI R.F. SCOTT // NELLA GLORIA // E NEL MARTIRIO // 1913'.

case: A square case with a red leather covering with gilt decoration, and a metal clasp and hinge. The lid is lined with a cream satiny textile which shows a crown and the words 'WYON // B. LANGHAM CHAMBERS // LONDON W.'. The base is lined with a green-brown velvety textile, with a hole for the medal.
