MaquetteRecord: Y: 2013/6A plaster maquette for the statues of Robert Falcon Scott in Waterloo Place, London (bronze); and Christchurch, New Zealand (marble). It was made by Scott's widow Kathleen and was, presumably, informed by a photograph taken by Henry Bowers at the British camp at the South Pole (refer, SPRI: P2005/5/1475) and other images from the expedition. The sculptor added a belt with a satchel containing a journal. The sculpture conveys the sense that Scott is confidently looking onwards, with the underlying message (recorded in Scott’s journal and ‘Message to the Public’) that he and his men remained resolute until the end. Text from Scott is inscribed on the plinths of both statues. The maquette was hand-modelled in clay and cast in plaster, and has a ferrous armature.
