Abstract: | Three papers. Records the findings of one of the largest private expeditions to Alaska, backed by Edward Harriman in co-operation with the Washington Academy of Sciences. The expedition sailed from Seattle along the Northwest Coast, through Bering Sea with stops at various islands, visiting Eskimo settlements on the Asiatic and American coasts, sailing through Bering Strait to Siberia before returning home. The first 2 volumes constitute the entire narrative section. Accompanying the expedition were artists R.Swain Gifford and Fred S.Dellenbaugh, as well as bird painter Louis Agassiz Fuertes. Most of the photographs are by E.S.Curtis or C.Hart Merriman. |
