Abstract: Concludes that Russian word yaman referred to Sitka black-tailed deer; 19th-century Russian dictionary definitions equate wild goats with small deer. Conclusion supported by examination of deer bones recovered during archaeological excavations dating to Russian period in Sitka, Alaska.
