Abstract: | Describes exploratory airborne observations made in January 1986 with downward-viewing lidar. Two types of cloud were observed: relatively opaque, mid-level layers 3 to 4 km below flight level (4 to 4.5 km MSL) and higher-altitude, optically transparent cirrus clouds exhibiting trails of ice crystals that extended from flight level to, sometimes, ground level. These trails showed evidence of strong vertical wind shear, and were observed to "seed" mid-level cloud layers. Observations attest to usefulness of lidar for atmospheric research in Antarctic regions. |
