Record #97129:

A preliminary performance and benefit analysis of the UK national road ice prediction system / John E. Thornes.

Title: A preliminary performance and benefit analysis of the UK national road ice prediction system / John E. Thornes.
Author(s): Thornes, John E.
Date: 1989.
In: Meteorological Magazine. (1989.), Vol. 118(1402) (1989)
Abstract: Since winter 1986-87, several local authorities have used computed-generated forecasts of overnight road-surface temperatures which may lead to icy conditions. Forecasts are made by Meteorological Office Weather Centres and disseminated through "Open Road" service, using software developed by Thermal Mapping International, based at University of Birmingham. System is explained and assessments of performance analyzed. Practical benefits in two areas (Cheshire and Hereford-and-Worcester) are discussed quantitatively, based on winter indices.
