Abstract: Model has been developed for this French glacier in order to study relations with climate and to investigate possible causes for observed variations in terminus record since beginning of Little Ice Age. Two simulations were run, but, in both cases, observed glacier retreat is too late. Improved simulations can only be obtained assuming additional negative mass-balance perturbation of around 0.1 m a⁻¹ over last 150 a. Results indicate that assumption of linear relationship between summer temperature and mass balance may not be valid when extrapolated to past environments. This may be evidence of additional micrometeorological and glacier-surface conditions prevailing in valleys at maximum glacier extent that are not absorbed well in climatic records.
