Abstract: Response of glacier may be complicated by large number of feedback mechanisms. Attempt is made to quantify such processes by carrying out numerical experiments with ice-flow model. Results indicate (1) importance of longitudinal bed profile, (2) glaciers on small slopes react more slowly to climatic change, due to height-mass balance feedback, and (3) mass-balance gradient observed on long valley glaciers is largely determined by systematic changes (along valley) in glacier width and surface albedo: balance gradient is thus coupled to dynamics and need further study.
