Record #97080:

Hydrometeorological conditions, mass balance and runoff from Alpine glaciers / David N. Collins.

Title: Hydrometeorological conditions, mass balance and runoff from Alpine glaciers / David N. Collins.
Author(s): Collins, David N.
Date: 1989.
Publisher: Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers
In: Glacier fluctuations and climatic change : proceedings of the Symposium on Glacier Fluctuations and Climatic Change, held in Amsterdam, 1-5 June 1987. (1989.),
Abstract: Aims of study are to identify appropriate variables to represent climatic elements which interact to influence glacier mass balance and runoff from glacierized areas, to examine relative importance of these elements in determining annual and seasonal variations in flow and annual changes in storage, and to quantify relationships between climatic variables selected, net balance and discharge. Climatic, glaciological and hydrological data for highly glacierized basins in high Alpine portion of catchment area of river Rhone in Kanton Wallis, Switzerland, were analyzed for period during which glaciers first decreased in area (up to mid-1960s) before readvancing slightly (which may have affected other relationships). Climatic influences on mass balance and runoff are assessed by use of correlation and multiple regression techniques, which linear methods have proved valuable in describing both climate/mass-balance and climate/glacier-runoff linkages.
