Record #96872:

Dating of ice by radioactive isotopes / Bernhard Stauffer.

Title: Dating of ice by radioactive isotopes / Bernhard Stauffer.
Author(s): Stauffer, Bernhard.
Date: 1989.
Publisher: Chichester: John Wiley & Sons
In: Environmental record in glaciers and ice sheets : report of the Dahlem Workshop on The Environmental Record in Glaciers and Ice Sheets, Berlin 1988, March 13-18. (1989.),
Abstract: May be enclosed in natural ice as part of water substance (³H), as aerosols (³²Si, ¹⁰Be), or in air bubbles (³⁹Ar, ¹⁴C, ⁸¹Kr). Suitability depends mainly on accuracy with which initial concentration at time of ice formation can be estimated. Applications of several isotopes are discussed. Generally, radioactive isotopes of gases, reaching equilibrium concentration in atmosphere and getting enclosed in air bubbles, are especially well-suited for dating.
