Record #96774:
Late Devensian raised shorelines and ice limits in the inner Moray Firth area, northern Scotland / Callum R. Firth.
Title: | Late Devensian raised shorelines and ice limits in the inner Moray Firth area, northern Scotland / Callum R. Firth. |
Author(s): | Firth, Callum R. |
Date: | 1989. |
In: | Boreas. (1989.), Vol. 18(1) (1989) |
Abstract: | Marine, fluvial and fluvioglacial landforms and deposits have been mapped in this area. Landforms indicate close association between decay of Late Devensian Scottish ice sheet and formation of raised marine features. Analysis of altitudes of marine terraces has identified ten glacio-isostatically tilted raised shorelines of Late Devensian age, sloping down N25°E, at progressively lower gradients between 0.57 and 0.15 m km⁻¹. Shorelines were formed in close association with westward- and southward-receding ice margin and shoreline sequence suggests that rates of ice-margin retreat were most rapid where ice terminated in sea. |
