Use of foil strain gauges in ice over a wide loading rate / Nirmal K. Sinha.
Title: | Use of foil strain gauges in ice over a wide loading rate / Nirmal K. Sinha. |
Author(s): | Sinha, Nirmal K. |
Date: | 1989. |
In: | Cold Regions Science and Technology. (1989.), Vol. 16(2) (1989) |
Abstract: | Experiments on laboratory-made pure ice and natural Arctic sea ice under uniaxial loading conditions over wide range of stress rates from 1x10⁻³ to 1.25x10² MN m⁻² s⁻¹ and responses of foil gauges were compared with those of displacement gauge also mounted on ice. Observations indicated that foil gauges are reliable at stress rates less than 1x10⁻¹ MN m⁻² s⁻¹. Analysis of system indicates that weak bond at interface between gauge carrier and adhesive layer of ice results in dampened response of gauges and limits their use at higher loading rates. This test series has also provided experimental data on dependence of effective modulus of ice on stress rate up to 1.2x10² MN m⁻² s⁻¹ or frequency of about 100 H. |
