| Abstract: | Outlines results obtained from five-year JARE glaciological programme in Dronning Maud Land, which began in 1981. Appears that thinning of ice sheet is caused by basal sliding due to melting of basal ice, which began beneath Shirase Glacier and has been expanding up-glacier to reach present situation. Calculation, using flow velocities, shows that thinning of glacier began 1500 to 2000 a BP. |
