Record #96624:

Dynamics of Jakobshavns ice stream, West Greenland (abstract) / Keith Echelmeyer, William D. Harrison.

Title: Dynamics of Jakobshavns ice stream, West Greenland (abstract) / Keith Echelmeyer, William D. Harrison.
Author(s): Echelmeyer, Keith.
Harrison, William D.
Date: 1989.
Publisher: Cambridge: International Glaciological Society
In: Annals of Glaciology. (1989.), Vol. 12 (1989)
Abstract: Field programme was undertaken during 1984-87 to investigate cause of high rate of flow of Jakobshavns Isbrae. Measurement of surface velocity showed no seasonal variations. Production of large amounts of melt-water at surface in ablation zone does not appear to influence speed directly. Calculations show that basal shear stresses along ice stream are large. If there is basal zone of favourably oriented ice (i.e. weak layer), then ice deformation under large stresses may account for fast motion in ice stream rather than basal sliding or deformation of basal debris, as has been proposed for Antarctic ice streams. Effects of tide level in fjord and of melt-water refreezing in percolation zone are also discussed.
