Abstract: Seismic experiments have shown metres-thick layer of unconsolidated sediment beneath Ice Stream B at location several hundred km up-stream from grounding line. It has been proposed that coupling line exists about 100 km up-stream from grounding line. Above coupling line, dynamic behaviour of ice stream may be dominated by deformation within basal sediment layers and erosion could be taking place at bottom of this layer. Below coupling line, it is suggested that sliding on lubricating water film becomes important and that subglacial sediments are deposited as delta. Preliminary results from 30 km seismic profile near coupling line of ice stream show prominent horizontal reflector several metres below base of ice; this is underlain by sequence of reflectors, each with down-stream dip of about 1. It is believed that horizontal and dipping reflectors represent, respectively, topsets and foresets of hypothesized delta.
